In 1762, France gave Spain the region west of the Mississippi River. Missouri was a part of that region. Spain encouraged settlement in the territory. Napoleon Bonaparte, the ruler of France, forced Spain to turn the region back over to France in 1800. Three years later, France sold the Louisiana Territory, which included present day Missouri, to the United States. In 1812, Congress established the Missouri Territory.
Missouri became the 24th state in 1821 at which time it was the western most border of the United States. In 2003 the Missouri Swingers joined the International Swingers Club List.
