The United States acquired Montana from France in the Louisiana Purchase. In 1805, President Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore Montana and other western regions. The population of Montana grew when gold was discovered there in 1862. In 1876, Lieutenant Colonel George Custer's regiment and the Sioux and Cheyenne tribes fought a famous battle near the Little Bighorn River. More than 200 of Custer's men were killed.
In 1889 Montana became the 41st state and in 2001 was added to the Swingers Club List of America.
